This accreditation provides learners with the essential knowledge and practical skills to safely conduct signing, lighting, and guarding, as well as locating and avoiding underground services in line with the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA). The course is structured into two key modules: Signing, Lighting & Guarding, which focuses on correctly setting up traffic and pedestrian management systems using approved equipment and methods, and Locating & Avoiding Underground Services, which covers safe systems of work, risk assessments, site surveys, interpretation of asset documentation, and physical identification methods. Together, these modules equip individuals with the skills to safely plan, assess risks, and implement best practices when working on or near underground utilities and public roadways.

Pre- requisite
This accreditation is available to anyone over the age of 16 who is capable of reaching the required standard. There are no barriers that restrict access or progression thereby promoting equal opportunity. It is expected however that learners will have a level of literacy adequate to cope with the assessment. This Smart Awards accreditation is based on a pre-requisite that any work on the highway requires appropriate Street Works qualifications to be held by an individual working on site, and that this individual is qualified to check that the planned provisions and the statutory requirements of NRSWA are met.
